The Colt Model 723, also referred to as the M16A2 Government Carbine, is a member of the AR-15 / M16 / M4 family of rifles. Prior to the introduction of the M4 carbine, the M16 and its various iterations served as the primary combat rifle for the United States Armed Forces since the Vietnam War. However, the long barrel profile and overall size of the M16 can pose challenges for specialized or covert operations. Consequently, carbine versions of the M16 were developed, commonly known as the CAR-15 (Colt Automatic Rifle-15) or the Colt Commando. Colt has released numerous variants of the short-barreled or carbine version of the M16.

This specific variant, the Model 723, was produced in limited quantities for use by USSOCOM units and has seen significant action with Delta Forces during their early operations in Panama, the first Gulf War, and the infamous Black Hawk Down mission. VFC has replicated this rifle with period-correct Colt trademarks and roll marks, licensed by Cybergun. It features a third-generation buffer tube with four adjustable stock positions, a short ribbed handguard, a Safe, Semi, and Auto fire control setting, A2-style rear sights, a forward assist, and a case deflector. Notably, it also includes an M4-style barrel profile.

As a product of VFC, this rifle is highly capable, operating on the reliable VFC V3 M4 / AR-15 gas system, with enhanced components for its updated valve knocker, fire control group, and zinc bolt carrier. In essence, this rifle is ready for deployment, akin to other VFC-made M4 / AR-15-styled gas airsoft rifles that preceded it, and it is expected to perform exceptionally well. The growing trend of retro builds for ARs makes this an excellent choice for recreating popularized configurations, often seen with well-known gun tubers such as Administrative Results, former Delta operatives Larry Vickers and Kyle Lamb, or featured in films like Blood Diamond, as well as in the stories of Medal of Honor recipients like MSgt. This particular version of the VFC M723 comes equipped with a steel bolt carrier assembly instead of a zinc-alloy for added durability and increased felt recoil impulse.
