About Real Type 56
The Type 56 rifle is not a single firearm but a family of weapons produced in China, all officially adopted in 1956. The most famous member of this family is the Type 56 automatic rifle, often called the Type 56 assault rifle or, historically, the ?Type 56 submachine gun? in Chinese service. This weapon is a direct derivative of the Soviet AK?47, and it looks very similar to the original. The most noticeable external difference is the Type 56?s fully enclosed front sight hood and its distinctive, permanently attached triangular bayonet. The Type 56 was manufactured in several variants: the standard Type 56 with a fixed wooden stock, the Type 56?1 with a downward?folding metal stock (copied from the Soviet AKS?47), and the later Type 56?2 with a side?folding stock similar to that of the AK?74. While the Type 56 automatic rifle is the best known, the Type 56 family also includes the Type 56 semi?automatic rifle, which is a Chinese copy of the Soviet SKS carbine, featuring a ten?round fixed magazine and intended for more accurate semi?automatic fire at longer ranges.
The Type 56 automatic rifle first saw major combat during the Sino?Indian War of 1962, where its automatic firepower gave Chinese troops a significant advantage. It later became a standard weapon of the People?s Liberation Army and was supplied in huge numbers to North Vietnam during the Vietnam War, where it performed extremely well and even competed with Soviet?made AK?47s. Over time, the Type 56 earned a reputation for being rugged, reliable, and very affordable to produce. As a result, it has been exported widely and has appeared in conflicts around the world, from the Iran?Iraq War to the wars in Syria and Afghanistan. Today, the Type 56 remains one of the most common assault rifles on the planet, often seen in the hands of both state military forces and non?state armed groups, particularly in Africa and the Middle East. Despite being superseded in Chinese service by more modern rifles like the QBZ?95, the Type 56?s simple, robust design ensures that it continues to be used and copied well into the twenty?first century.
