The STEN Mk.6 was developed in 1945 as a suppressed special purpose weapon, like the Mk.2(S), but as an adaptation of the Mk.5. The design is generally similar to the Mk.5, with the trigger mechanism remaining unaltered and the same design breech block and return spring being used. The original receiver was retained but with the addition of a dovetail slot for the fitting of a front sight as used on the STEN Mk.2. The wooden pistol grip and butt stock were kept largely the same as the Mk.5 as well. The suppressor, which is is integrated into the barrel design, functions on the same principles as the Mk.2(S) but differs slightly in construction. It was also covered with an insulating canvas heat shield to use as a hand grip. The SMG served with British and Australian Special Forces and Commando units throughout its service life before finally being retired.
